Air Source Heat pumps are systems with two distinct parts. The outdoor unit- to transfer energy fromthe air via refridgerant to heat or cool a space using air handler equipment with a coil and back up heating source using gas or electricity.

On Vancouver Island the SEER (seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, the rating to measure efficiency of cooling) often overshadows the HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, the rating to measure efficiency of heating) even though the heating mode is used much more often, be sure to know both ratings on all comperable equipment.
